Hi Guys,
hope you can help me with some ssd issues.
I had purchased 6 X Supertalent (ST) ultra drives to put in Raid 0 on an Asus P6T mobo using Win7 64 bit (using RC version to date)
i soon discovered that the ST firmware did not present the barefoot? controller to the os, so win 7 could not apply it's TRIM function and other goodies. over time performace would degrade and the only thing to do was to reformat and clean install.
ST had come up with a few firmware revisions, but none worked, in my desperation after quite some months i obtained an RMA, so now they will be returned and i can go shopping for a new brand.
In my SSD information gathering journeys to date a few interesting things have come to light.
A friend of mine bought a new computer with one SSD in it and i was struggling to see that my computer loaded photoshop any faster than his (that was humiliating)
At a read speed of 230 MBS (1.84Gbs), and a sata2 ports speed of 3Gbs i should not have a problem. It seems there is a bottleneck somewhere, perhaps the ICH10R raid controller? The quickpath system on the mobo (raid controller to cpu) is 4.8GT/s so that should not be a problem is transferring the full data rate from 6 SSD's.
Also looked into a PCIe solution. Seems there can be bottle necks there too because of the need for the bus to be shared, but i dont know - that could have been just scare mongering.
My main performance need is for fast read speeds, not so much worried about fast writes. Not worried about raid 5 either, data is on other drives, so if i lose a drive i would just reconsolidate drives and reload windows and programs. Raid 0 is supposed to provide the fasted read.
So my questions now are.
What brands to buy?. How many to buy? Is there an optimal number of ssd's to get before system performance penalties begin to work against me? How can i be sure that any future ssd array i compile will present to the os with the right controller so that trim and goodies will work.
Some new Asus mobos claim to be designing out sata bottlenecks, but for now am stuck with current board. It does not appear that having 6 disks gives a one sixth read speed, or even similar allowing for some unknown penalty, possibly in the raid controller. |

| The new Intel 80GB Generation 2 SSDs sound like a good bet for you. It's not as fast in writes as some of the ones with the SDRAM cache but you're getting extremely fast read. |

Because in my body have been have the same problem until I discovered the "SING" SLC SSD, I have to tell you that this is a very powerful SSD, the highest reading a single disk read speed of 270MB / S, the maximum write into the speed of 250MB / S. I'm not sure if trim works in Raid arrays at this time but I have seen SSD's which state thay can be used in a raid array. As an example here's a review about an OCZ vertex 60GB, " Insane, blistering performance e.g. Photoshop loads in LESS than 5 SECONDS!" I personaly like Intel vs ocz that has firmware updates that I don't like.
